A New Year Has Begun!

We have had a great start to the school year! I can honestly say that Morningside School is a WONDERFUL place to spend each day. Your children are absolutely delightful! Over the past several weeks I have been making photos to give you a glimpse into our day. Enjoy!

Morningside School Year Begins Monday and Tuesday, August 26th and 27th

Dear Friends of Morningside School,

I hope you had a good time at the open house and that your child is anticipating the 1st day of school with the same excitement that we feel!  The staff has been busy getting all the last minute details put together so that the day is great for everyone.  Monday and Tuesday, I will be standing next to the drive with a check list and name cards for pick up.  Please make sure you have a card before you leave so that pick up time at the end of your child’s session goes smoothly.

You are welcome to park in the Senior Citizen’s Center lot and walk in if you are concerned about separation anxiety or have questions for me or your child’s teachers. Please do not leave your car in the drive and walk up, this creates a traffic jam and unsafe conditions for children, families and the staff. Safety is our ultimate concern.  The staff at Morningside will be tenderhearted with your child through this transition and if you would like reassuring phone call during the first session, please make sure we know you would like us to call.

I will be sending home tuition statements to any family who has not yet paid tuition for September. If you already received one at the open house, please do not be offended. Things got so hectic Thursday, we were not able to keep accurate track of everything, so to make sure we are covered, I will reprint them and send it home on your child’s first day of school.  You may also be asked to sign your application form if you have not yet done so.

And one last thought – for those of you who are anxious about leaving your little ones at school, perhaps for the first time — a very favorite conversation between Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh that I have reflected on often as a parent and conveyed to my children this year as they went off to a new school —

“If ever there is tomorrow when we’re not together, there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart, I’ll always be with you.”

“Friends Around the World” Unit & Cinco De Mayo Celebration!

This week the preschool classes made passports and traveled to Africa, Asia, Europe and Central America!  Teacher Jenny and Teacher Marie truly brought the world to Morningside School with all kinds of international crafts, games and food! Preschool Mom, Christina Ledesma came to school today to help us wrap up the week with a Cinco De Mayo Celebration!  She showed the children how to make tortillas, and read Frida, by Jonah Winter in Spanish and English.  The kindergarteners joined in the fun by making maracas and dancing to latin music!   Thanks to everyone who made a special effort this week to give Morningside School a truly international flavor.  Gracias!

Morningside Kindergarten Class makes VOLCANOS!

The Kindergarten class learned about the chemical reaction that occurs when you mix vinegar and baking soda — Viola! VOLCANOES!

Registration for 2013-2014 School Year Begins

Now is the time!  Register your child to attend Morningside School in 2013-2014.  We offer an amazingly low teacher-to-student ratio, 1:8 for Preschool; 1:12 in Kindergarten and that does not count all of our terrific USU practicum students! Our small class sizes allow children of diverse backgrounds and developmental levels to thrive  — but that also means it’s important to register early to ensure your child has a spot for fall.  If you are already a Morningside family, just call 753-1001 or email me and we will get your child registered asap!

A Whirlwind of Announcements for Spring!

The winds of the changing season bring some transition to Morningside School. We are very excited for Teacher Jenny and Teacher Maren, who will both be having babies in the next couple of months!  We are also thrilled for Teacher Jill, who has gotten a very special opportunity for her dental externship, but we are sad that this means she too will be leaving us. Friday will be Maren and Jill’s last day.  Teacher Jenny hopes to continue until mid May.  Morningside School’s Assistant Director, Teacher Marie will be back full-time to help us make the end of the year as wonderful as it started!  It is hard to say goodbye to such sweet teachers, but we know that they have important business to attend to, and we send them off with our blessings!

Here’s a list of things happening in the next few months at Morningside School!

A Visitor from Cache Valley Center for the Arts

We had a wonderful visitor this morning!  Dance Instructor Tessa Evans came to Morningside to provide an incredibly fun workshop in creative movement.  Ms. Evans and her colleagues lead dance classes with three and fours year olds each semester at the Cache Valley Center for the Arts. In the classes, they explore coordination, locomotor steps, rhythm and music, body awareness, improvisation, and the joy of movement stimulated by props, stories, art, poetry, and music.  Thanks so much for coming to Morningside School Ms. Evans!  We all had such a great time! For more information about dance classes for children in the Valley Dance Ensemble click here.

A Kindergarten Year to Remember

gigi_leynaTeacher Gigi has some terrific stuff going on in her classroom!  The students in Kindergarten have worked very hard all year and they have accomplished so much!   In Math, they are practicing counting and writing to 100, and many are adding and subtracting!  In Science, they have done experiments all year, observing everything from how mold grows to the silly surprise that occurs when you combine certain ingredients to make “Elephant Tooth Paste”. The kindergarteners are  looking forward to April, when they will be making volcanoes for Science Week!  Teacher Gigi has also done a phenomenal job teaching these kids to read — we’ve got some serious star readers in Kindergarten and they are learning more everyday. They have made great progress with  handwriting too! We are so proud of them.

marieprofileIn May, the kindergarten class will be performing an adaptation of Eric Carle’s, The Very Hungry Caterpillar written by the children with Teacher Marie’s help.  Everyone is very excited to have our Assistant Director, Teacher Marie back at Morningside this spring.  Teacher Marie has been at Morningside School for nearly 20 years and I’m pleased to announce that she will be back to teaching AM Kindergarten this Fall! We have missed her dearly and we celebrate her good health and her return to us! Hooray!!!!
